The Ziggurat Challenge is a ‘recreational-level’ programme of events open to all students, alumni, staff and faculty of the University including those based at the Norwich Research Park. The programme has been designed to promote enjoyable participation in the spirit of sporting competition as well as encourage friendly interaction/rivalry between schools.

Who can take part?

Any student, alumni, member of staff or faculty, (including Norwich Research Park based staff) can compete in the Ziggurat Challenge.

What’s more it’s free! You can take part in, or spectate at, every event this year and pay absolutely nothing (*60p entry to the Sportspark without an activated campus card) We value your participation more than your money, so no excuses, just turn up and join in.
…and no matter how limited you may think your experience of a sport is, you can still give it a go and be in with a chance of winning valuable points for your school.

What sports does it involve?

15 different sporting events (see full timetable below) with all events requiring mixed gender teams.

Whilst this year’s programme is slightly different to previous years, we have tried to keep some in-person events in the calendar. Although the Ziggurat Challenge may have a slightly different look and feel this year, we are really excited to get the programme up and running, but rest assured we will be continuously monitoring Government and sport-specific NGB guidelines to ensure all activities are COVID-secure. For the most up to date information on events, please check our social media pages.

CURRENT EVENTS

Event 1: Cross Country

Please see the below ‘green route’ image to view the route – it is 3.5km (2 laps required – 1 lap is 1.7km). Obviously we would love for everyone to run the route specified but we understand not everybody can access campus at the moment, so if you would still like to participate you may run a route totalling 3.5km in the location of your choice.

The run must be completed between Monday 12th and Sunday 18th October.

To enter the event, participants must complete this online form which includes an upload section where you are required to submit a screenshot of your run on any physical activity tracking app e.g. MapMyRun, Strava etc.

More than 4 athletes can take part but only the top 2 male & female athletes from each team will score points.

PRIZE: The fastest student and staff male and female runners from each academic school will be awarded 5000 points on the UEA+MOVES app – these points can be redeemed for free hot drinks, fruit and veg, protein bars, or a UEA+MOVES branded protein shaker. You would also be very close to the number of points needed for a branded water bottle or t-shirt!

Event 2: Fun Run/Stroll

Please see the below ‘green route’ image to view the route – it is 1.7km (1 lap). Obviously we would love for everyone to walk the route specified as it is a beautiful and peaceful walking trail, but we understand not everybody can access campus at the moment, so if you would still like to participate you may walk a route totalling 1.7km in the location of your choice.

The walk must be completed between Monday 12th and Sunday 18th October.

To enter the event, participants must complete this online form which includes an upload section where you are required to submit a screenshot of your walk on any physical activity tracking app e.g. MapMyRun, Strava etc. OR you may submit a photo of yourself by the Man of Stones sculpture (location and image below) to prove you have walked halfway around the broad (this way, even if you turn around, you’ll still have walked 1.7km!).

The winning team will be the school/dept. with the most participants – you cannot enter multiple times; if you do the walk 7 times, you will still earn the same number of points as someone who only does the walk once.
